Pies, glorious pies!

Meet an icon of British cuisine

Pies, glorious pies! The Pie is one of the icons of British cuisine. Savoury, sweet, hot or cold, us Brits eat millions of them every single year. 75% of people in the UK eat on average, just one pie a month according to farmersfletcherscity.london. 1% of those surveyed confessed to consuming over 10 pies per month! That’s a lot of pie…

As you may already know, we’re a fan of pies here at JR’s Kitchen, with our menu including something for just about everyone.

Back in 2020, in early March, (how has it already been a year?) we drove ourselves and a fridge full of pies to the beautiful Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire to the British Pie Awards. Those were the days where you could leave your local area and meet with multiple people in person, as opposed to faces via Zoom. We really can’t believe it has almost been a year since the National Pie Awards. Not only was it the first competition we had ever entered, we were also competing against large national brands!

For those who may not know. Melton Mowbray gained fame during the latter half of the nineteenth century for its pork pies and is now the Rural Capital of Food. But why pork pies? Well… Melton developed a very high concentration of Stilton cheesemakers, and with the development of the cheese industry, whey was produced which became an ideal food source for pigs. Therefore, pork had become a staple in the Melton diet. The rest is pork pie history!

So, whilst in the Rural Capital of Food, alongside 250 judges and close to 900 pies, our pies were put to the test and sampled by the pros.

Although we couldn’t face staying until the end, we’re proud to say we walked away with award-winning pies. Our Chicken, Leek and Mushroom pie won a shiny Silver Award, and our Bombay Aloo Pasty received a Bronze Award.

With Pie on your mind, we’d like to let you know the brilliant news that we will be returning to markets in March and we’re very much looking forward to it. The first is being held on Friday 5th March at Reuthe’s then the Knockholt Farmers’ market at Coolings on the 27th.

Given the ‘Roadmap’ back to normal goes to plan, we’re looking forward to socialising with you all again very soon. We love, and very much miss handing out tasters, seeing your faces and receiving your feedback when you taste our range of delicious, high quality, handmade food.

We look forward to seeing you again soon.
